Tweeps accuse Lagos police officers of phone raid and extortion

Lagos State Police have been accused of searching residents’ mobile phones and extorting money from them.

Inspector General of Police Usman Baba had warned officers not to search residents’ phones.

Some Twitter users claimed on Tuesday that officers searched cellphones for incriminating documents and also extorted money using point-of-sale terminals.

A cryptocurrency coach, @ThePaulOla, lamented that N5,000 was extorted from him at Mile 2.

He wrote, “I have just been stopped by members of @PoliceNG along Mile 2 Road. Told me to get into their van, checked my phone, saw nothing and still collected $5000 from me via POS.

In response, the Force’s public relations officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, assured that the illegal act would be suppressed.

Adejobi said, “Another point of sale? Haaaa, can you please reach out to Ben and I? dust. Anyway, whatever they want to say, they can go on, we will do what is necessary to curb all this excess. Too bad.”

A @ohagwachidera, who claimed he did not part with the money after meeting the suspects at Mile 2, said he was beaten when he mentioned the IG order.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said the command was monitoring the situation.
