SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects in a traffic stop who injured a sheriff’s deputy and are looking for the driver of the fleeing vehicle.

Just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a deputy carried out a traffic check in block 5300 of boulevard SW Topeka on a blue Mercedes C300 passenger car, according to deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, the driver and front passenger attempted to exit the vehicle on several occasions. The front passenger, later identified as Tony M. Gant Jr, 39, of Topeka, exited the vehicle, refused to follow commands and sparked a physical altercation with the deputy.

During the physical altercation that led to Gant’s arrest, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Gant was arrested, incarcerated in Shawnee County Corrections on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer and interfering with law enforcement.
