Search underway for boater lost at sea in Cape May County

The Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police are looking for an overdue boater Tuesday about 1 mile east of Cape May Villas.

Coast Guard officials said Christian Johnathon Hosford, Jr., 33, was last seen at sunset On Monday in a 10ft John boat near his home in Cape May Villas.

Officials say Hosford did not have a life jacket, whistle or other safety equipment with him at the time.

Delaware Bay Coast Guard sector watchmen received a call at 9:50 p.m. Monday, of Hosford’s friend stating that he had not returned at the scheduled time of around 6:30 p.m.

The search is ongoing by the following rescue agencies and teams:

Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter, Coast Guard Station Cape May 2929ft Small Response Boat, Coast Guard Station Fortesque 29ft Small Response Boat, Coast Guard Cutter Rollin Fritch, New Jersey State Police Helicopter and New Jersey Police Boat Crews State of New Jersey.

UPDATE 8:18 a.m. The boater was found about a mile north of the search area in Dennis Creek sleeping on his boat.
