Search for human remains near Westside gas station continues for 2nd day

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Searchers were spotted again Thursday morning near Chaffee Road and Crystal Springs Boulevard, where the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that investigators were looking for human remains.

JSO declined to give details of the case related to the Westside Jacksonville search.

On Thursday morning, a News4JAX crew saw heavy equipment heading into the woods in the area where investigators spent the day searching on Wednesday.

Sky4 flew over the scene on Wednesday afternoon and could see three yellow bulldozers and investigators with shovels searching vacant land next to a petrol station. There was also a green and white digger digging in the woods as well as tents and a mobile command post.

No other details were immediately available.

A JSO spokesperson told News4JAX the search does not implicate Iyana Sawyer, a pregnant 16-year-old who was last seen leaving Terry Parker High School in December 2018.

His uncle, Johnathan Quiles, 34, was indicted in 2019 for murder in the death of Sawyer and her unborn child and will soon stand trial.

His body has never been found.
