Police complete overnight search for fugitive killer in Madison County


NORTH ZULCH, Texas — Authorities wrapped up the search in Madison County around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Robert Hurst of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said: “There was a tip that was followed up. Nothing was found.”

Hurst also says the TDCJ’s on-site command center is now at the Leon County Annex.

A fleet of TDCJ vehicles also continues to patrol and monitor activity around the original search area.


Authorities said an active search is underway in Madison County for convicted cartel killer Gonzalo Lopez, who escaped nearly three weeks ago.

Madison County Sheriff Bobby Adams said 25 News an eyewitness spotted a man around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday he said matched Lopez’s description.

Officers arrived where Route 21 crosses the Navasota River near North Zulch as a person fled into a wooded area, Adams said.

Authorities said the section of Highway 21 is closed to the public as they travel the area.

25 News contacted the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for comment on Lopez’s search, but officials did not return our calls.

It comes as the US Marshals Service released new photos of Lopez last week.

Officials urge you to call 9-1-1 if you have any information leading to his capture and to exercise caution as he is considered extremely dangerous.
