Illan Meslier on Barcelona shortlist for goalkeeper search

Barcelona will be looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and are considering several different targets, including Leeds United’s Illan Meslier.

Somehow, at just 21 years old, Meslier is widely regarded as one of the most promising goalkeepers in world football and several top teams are watching him closely.

Manchester United scouts watched Meslier earlier in the season – picking the 7-0 at the hands of Manchester City for their ill-fated exit – and now Mundo Deportivo think Barcelona are following him too.

At Camp Nou, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the undisputed starter and he will remain so for the foreseeable future. He is under contract until 2025 and manager Xavi does not yet want to offload him. However, it’s behind him in the depth charts that Barcelona aren’t happy with.

Current assistant Neto is one of the highest paid reserve goalkeepers. He joined for the bulk of £30million in 2019 but has only played 20 games since then and is set to be sold this summer when he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Meslier has impressed Camp Nou scouts and a bid could be made this summer – a cause that would be helped if Leeds suffer relegation from the Premier League – but the 21-year-old has four years left on his contract and would no doubt command a huge transfer fee, no matter what division he plays in.

It looks like Barcelona are aware of this and are considering a handful of other options. Nantes’ Alban Lafont, Fiorentina’s Bartlomiej Dragowski and Genk’s Maarten Vandevoordt have all been shortlisted as young targets, while 30-year-old Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou is also on the radar.

Barcelona are also considering a replacement role for 22-year-old Inaki Pena, who made the first senior appearance of his career earlier this month after agreeing a six-month loan deal with Galatasaray.
