Google search indexing issue on July 15th. Google no longer indexes new content.

There is a confirmed indexing issue in Google Search before 7am ET this morning. None of the articles I posted this morning on this site still show up in Google search, even when I search for it by exact title or place a site order. Google is not indexing new content freshly posted earlier this morning. Google later confirmed with the Search Engine Roundtable that the search engine had “an ongoing indexing issue in Google Search that affects a large number of sites.”

This issue at 4 PM ET started to improve and it looks like Google had this indexing outage for about ten hours on July 15, 2022.

It’s in both Google Search and Google News where Google isn’t showing new content as of this morning.

  • Before 7 a.m. ET, a Google bug caused new content not to be indexed by Google
  • 10:50 a.m. ET Google has confirmed there is a problem with indexing
  • 3:00 PM ET Google has identified the issue and is working on a fix
  • 4 p.m. ET, we’re starting to see new content appear in the Google search index

The Wall Street Journal also hasn’t posted any new content to Google Search in the past hour. Nor are The New York Times, The Verge, or other news sites that constantly release new content.

Here are screenshots using site controls limiting news to the past hour, showing no new content being posted from these sites – click to enlarge images. Note that to test this, filter the Google results to only show content from the past hour.

Hats off to Zain Alkhadi on Twitter for spotting this so early.

Digging deeper, content that Google would normally rank from this site within minutes of being published is crawled by Google according to Google Search Console, but is not currently in the index – again unusual. Here’s a screenshot of a story from about an hour ago:

So if you’re having indexing issues and your new content isn’t currently showing up in Google Search, you’re not alone.

Google had indexing or display issues in Dec 2021 and June 2020 which was a confirmed crawl issue and in May 2020 April 2020 we’ve seen it multiple times in the last year with multiple instances of this last year but maybe one this year that didn’t matter.

I wonder how long it will take for this content to show up in Google search.

Do you all see this problem?

Update: Google has now confirmed the issue:

Just a side note, GA4 realtime analytics also seems broken, but Universal Analytics 3 seems fine. So keep that in mind when looking at your analytics.

Update #2: Google said they found the issue as of 3:00 PM and are currently working on a fix:

Update #3: At 4 p.m. ET, I’m starting to see new content popping up in Google search results:
